How Lessons Work
For either youth or adult prospective students, first we meet for an initial “interview” session. We discuss why the student is interested in music lessons, and some potential goals or specific things to explore if there are any. The student is invited to play some music on the piano, or try it out with some guidance if this is their first time.
Throughout lessons, I like to introduce students to various things such as music theory, aural perception games/exercises, rhythm exercises, improvisation, sightreading, and composition. Depending on the student’s interest and needs, certain topics may be focused on more than others (e.g., if a student wishes to learn how to play pop music or fake books, they may need to focus more on chords and patterns).

All Students
Lessons are primarily individual, but group lesson opportunities will also be available. Lessons are offered in different lengths:
- 30 minutes (for young beginners)
- 45 minutes
- 60 minutes.
For young beginners, parents/guardians are highly encouraged to attend lessons. In general, parents and guardians are encouraged to learn how to build a supportive environment at home (from having a piano to making sure there is a time during which the student can comfortably play without distractions).
Students are encouraged to utilize music learning apps, audio recording, etc. if they have access to the technology.
